About The Project
Bridging the A-I-R brings together six partners from Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, Germany and Spain to improve how artistic residencies work. From 2026 to 2030 we test practical models, share experiences and build a connected network of ART-IN-RES platforms. For artists this means clearer information and more opportunities. For host organisations it offers resources, mentoring and shared learning. The project focuses on sustainable mobility, fair conditions and strong local connections, informed by participants' experiences and open to the field.

Find a residency · ART-IN-RES platforms
Looking for a residency or a place to host artistic work? ART-IN-RES helps connect artists and residency providers. Bridging the A-I-R supports three national platforms — Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary — with practical information about residency venues and opportunities. Choose where to start.
Residencies in practice
Residency models
What makes a residency useful for artists, hosts and the place where it happens? Our research describes ten residency scenarios and selects four for practical testing. The focus is on how residencies connect with local contexts, how artists travel, how learning is supported and how the work can continue after the stay. The results support both experienced hosts and organisations starting their first residency programme.
-
Pilot tested
Production & Creation
Supports professional artistic creation across all stages of the process, from research to final presentation. Instead of pushing artists toward a finished piece, the model creates optimal conditions for experimentation, development and public sharing. Formats remain flexible — works in progress, open studios, performances or workshops. For individual artists, groups and companies working in theatre, dance, circus, performance and interdisciplinary practices.
-
Pilot tested
Community-Based
Treats the residency as a space for co-creation with local people and places. Artists work in dialogue with the community through open exchange, voluntary participation and shared experience. Local knowledge and relationships become creative resources. For artists, groups and collectives in rural, peripheral or urban settings — typically 10 to 14 days, with reciprocal benefits that continue after the residency ends.
-
Pilot tested
Cross-Disciplinary
Brings artists together with professionals from other fields — education, sciences, ecology, technology — to open new ways of thinking, researching and creating. Infrastructure gives access to specialised resources, equipment and expertise beyond the arts. For individuals, groups and established companies ready for professional-level collaboration across disciplines. Typically 7 to 20 days, with outcomes ranging from research and prototypes to performances and public presentations.
-
Pilot tested
Organisational Development
Strengthens the people, teams and organisations that make artistic work possible. Instead of focusing on an artistic output, this residency gives organisations time and space to reflect, plan and learn together — through coaching, peer learning, job shadowing and strategic planning. For artistic directors, producers, cultural managers and whole teams. Short format (2 to 10 days), with outcomes such as action plans, strategic roadmaps and new working methods.
The full proposal of ten residency models — including those not selected for pilot testing — is available as an open-access publication.
